12 November 2010 – History of Road Bowling
History of Road Bowling by Dr Seamus Ó Tuama, senior lecturer in UCC
15 October 2010 Killarney – Fact, Fable or Fiction
This talk was delivered by Dr. Jim Larner, formerly of OPW, dealt with the development of tourism, detailing Queen Victoria’s visit to that town.
August 2010 – Heritage Walks with Clare Heardman
For Heritage Week we focused on heritage walks with Clare Heardman. They were:
- Railwayline, old station and Béicín Walk
- The old docks (sand quays), Blackrock, Árd na mBráthar, Kilnaruane Pillar, and down the back way to Bantry House for bat watching / listening at East stables
- Another walk led past Priest’s Leap Stone along old road to Donemark Mills and more bats!
- Walk to the Mass Rock and old well at Beach hearing all the local history and folklore of that side of town
- Guided historical walk of Bantry town.
August 2009 – Kilnaruane Pillar Stone Walk
Bantry Historical Society had a very successful Heritage Week event in August 2009, when Canon Liam Leader led an enthusiastic group of members and friends on a walk to the famous Kilnaruane Pillar Stone near Westlodge Hotel. Canon Liam had earlier given an inspiring talk to a packed audience of society members about Kilnaruane Pillar Stone.
Dr James Hourihane, on right, earlier co-wrote a detailed article on this monument. Rory O’Callaghan, Mayor of the (then) Bantry Town Council is on left of photo. Bantry Historical Society is truly indebted to Canon Leader for alerting us to the uniqueness of this monument.
March 2009 – Kilnaruane Pillar Stone Talk
Kilnaruane Pillar Stone, a talk by Canon Liam Leader including an interesting interpretation of each of the carvings on this historic pillar stone. The large crowd was very appreciative of his insights on this matter.
