An illustrated talk by Áine Brosnan, Archaeologist, who supervised (from an archaeological point of view) the digging of the route of the pipeline from Wolfe Tone Square to Beach for the new sewerage scheme.

August 2011 – Storytelling & Heritage Week

An evening of storytelling with a number of contributors and a fine audience.

For Heritage Week we liaised with Clare Heardman of NPWS. We had a series of heritage walks:

  1. Abbey Sculpture Garden to Blue Hill Coastguard Station
  2. Newtown Fort and shoreline walk to Newtown cross
  3. Knocknaveagh hill walk with megalithic tomb
  4. Mealagh Valley wood walk including megalithic tomb
  5. Ecclesiastical walk of Bantry town including site of first Catholic Church and first Church of Ireland building.

31 July 2011 – The Old Railway Line

Guided walk led by Richard Butler on the route of the old railway line around Bantry town culminating at the old railway station at Harbour View. Also included a visit to the aquaduct at Carrignagat.

11 March 2011 – 50 Years Since the Train Came West

Illustrated talk by Maurice McCarthy of Clonakilty, a noted railway enthusiast, marking the 50th anniversary of the closing of the West Cork Railway.
